Arnold Vandevander

MONTEREY, VA

Arnold Lee Vandevander, 83, of Monterey, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016 at his home.  He was born December 4, 1932 at Boyer, WV a son of the late Thomas and Marcella (Calhoun) Vandevander.

A farmer, Mr. Vandevander had previously worked at Howes Leather Company, Highland Pipeline Construction, Brown Beard’s Farm in Bartow, WV, and was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation.  He was an avid hunter and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

On October 27, 1951, he married Dorothy Ruth Bowers, who preceded him in death on February 15, 2015.  He was also predeceased by six brothers, Harry, Gerald, Stanley, Lake, Arthur, and Eston; five sisters, Christine, Anne Lee, Helen, Mary and Kathy and stepmother, Iva (Hedrick) Vandevander.

Surviving family members include his children, Carolyn “Kay” Wright and husband, Johnny of Franklin, WV, Elsie “Mae” Hazelwood and husband, David of Crozet, David Wayne Vandevander of Monterey and Robert “Bobby” Wade Vandevander and wife, Claranel of Monterey; twelve grandchildren, Clifton Vandevander, whom he reared, Melissa Wright Hull, James Wright, Julie Wright Souza, Genia Adkins Towler, Timmy Lee Adkins, Dacy Vandevander, Diana Geraghty, Derrick Ross, Lisa Finney, Kim Claytor, and Ashley Robertson; twenty great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Vandevander of Florida and Ray Vandevander of Arbovale, WV and three sisters, Frances Barnett of Cass, WV, Rebecca Moses of Beverly, WV and Sylvia Mitchell of Alabama.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.

Burial will follow in Rexrode-Bowers Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Roger Arbogast, Raymond Smith, Alan Puffenbarger, Shorty Waybright, Jim Pennington, Joe Will, Jerry Moats, and Russell Hull.

The family will receive friends from 6 -8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
