Barbara Jean (Klein) Hevener

Barbara Jean (Klein) Hevener, age 97, of Monterey, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2026 at her home.

She was born September 12, 1928 and raised on Long Island, New York, a daughter of the late William L. and Mildred (Hall) Klein.

On May 3, 1952, she married James Boice Hevener, who preceded her in death January 17, 2003.

An artist, Barbara attended Skidmore College and Parson’s School of Design, where she met her husband. She enjoyed working in water colors and designing one of a kind lamp shades. Her love of art led her to becoming a partner of the Personal Touch, where her unique art could be found.

Her father, a professional golfer, encouraged Barbara’s love of the game, often including her as his fourth. Barbara and Jim raised their two children in Montclair, N.J., where Barbara was a club champion at Montclair Golf Club.

After moving to Meadowdale in 1985, Barbara became a member of the Monterey Presbyterian Church, Monterey Garden Club, and Meals on Wheels. She also served on the Highland County Arts Council Board and Highland County Public Library Board. Additionally, she enjoyed playing Bridge with the former Wednesday Bridge Group, as well as Scrabble.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jim Koehane Malone; and sister, Shirley Keen.

She is survived by her children, Mary Elizabeth Hevener and of Phillipsburg, NJ, and John R. Hevener and wife, Terri of Hightown; granddaughter, Sophie Hevener of Hightown; as well as her great-granddaughter, Malyshka.

A private ceremony for Barbara will be held by her family at a later date.
