Berlie May Botkin Jr., age 54, of Scottsville, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
He was born August 12, 1971 in Staunton, a son of the late Berlie May and Leona Charlotte (Hartman) Botkin. He was a 1989 graduate of Highland High School.
Raised in Highland County, Berlie carried with him a deep appreciation for his roots, family, and the values of hard work and dedication throughout his life. He built a respected career as a project manager with Virginia Department of Transportation, where he worked diligently for many years and earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Above all else, Berlie was a caring husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Botkin of Scottsville; and their four children, Ellee, Karsyn, Talan and Rigginz. He is also survived by his sisters, Diana, Bonnie and Jenny Botkin, all of Monterey, as well as his niece, Josey Bolling of Monterey. He shared a very special, close and lifelong bond with each of them. He will be remembered by his many extended family members who loved him dearly. Family was deeply important to Berlie, and he treasured the love, support, and countless memories he shared throughout his life.
In addition to his family, Berlie leaves behind many friends and colleagues who will remember his kindness, strength, and sense of humor. Among them are his lifelong best friend, Aaron Sponaugle, whose friendship began during their teenage years and remained a constant source of support, laughter, and companionship. Berlie was also fortunate to have the close friendship of Wilton Simmons and Darryl Wagner, both of whom held a special place in his life. Throughout his career with VDOT, he formed lasting friendships and often referred to his coworkers as his “second family.” He shared a special bond with Greg Cooley, Jeremy McCray, and Charles Hepler, and he often spoke fondly of the many experiences, memories, and laughter they shared over the years. He treasured the time spent with his friends, and the memories they created together will be cherished by all who knew him.
Those who knew Berlie will remember will remember his strong work ethic, his endless stories, and his willingness to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. His presence brought comfort and stability to those around him, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Berlie Botkin Jr. will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 5, 2026 in Blue Grass Cemetery, with Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor his memory, share their condolences, and pay their final respects.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Sponaugle, Wilton Simmons, Stu Simmons, Pat Hull, Darryl Wagner, Wendell Barker, Charles Hepler, Jeremy McCray and Greg Cooley.
Though he is no longer with us, the joy, guidance, and memories Berlie shared with his family and friends will remain a lasting source of comfort and strength. His legacy will live on through those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Highland County Fire Department, PO Box 267, Monterey, Va. 24465.
