Bernice Alred

Bernice Hicklin Alred, 97, of McDowell, died Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at Bath County Community Hospital.

Mrs. Alred was born October 30, 1906, in McDowell and was the daughter of the late William Richard and Rose Armstong Hicklin.

She was a graduate of Madison College and taught public school in Doe Hill. She also had been locally employed by the U.S. Postal Service and had worked as a campground hostess in Georgia.

Her husband, Ben Alred, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Terry of McDowell and Helen Myers of Westminister, Md.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The body was cremeated.

A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004, at the Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
