Bessie Cleek Lightner, 96, of Staunton, passed away Sunday evening, June 4, 1989 at the Liberty House Nursing Home in Waynesboro.

She was born September 25, 1892 at Starr Chapel in Bath County, a daughter of Bias A. and Almira Frances (Baldwin) Cleek. On January 18,1922, she married Harry Robert Lightner. who preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Green Hill United Methodist Church at Mill Gap and a charter member of the Sarah Murray Lewis Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by two daughters, Leta Wimer and Irene Bogan, both of Staunton; two sons, Harry Lightner Jr. of Staunton and Ernest H. Lighter of Monterey; two half sisters, Mrs. Raymond Sandy of Stephen City and Mrs. Ben Tucker of Richmond; 22 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lightner was preceded in death by two sons, Robert B. and Vernon C. Lightner; and a brother, Dewey S. Cleek.

A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday in Obaugh Funeral Home by Dr. Robert Gue. Burial will be in the Jacob Cleek Cemetery near Warm Springs.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Gregory Wimer, Herbert, Paul, Raymond, Gene, Ernie, David, Gary and Russell Lightner.

The family will receive friends, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
