Carlton Eugene “Gene” Hilbert, 79, of Monterey and formerly of Dayton died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at his home. He was born June 16, 1928 in Rockingham County a son of the late Gordon M. and Sally Ann (Mongold) Hilbert.
He was a member of Briery Branch Church of the Brethren and attended Church of God of Prophecy in Monterey.
Mr. Hilbert had owned and operated Ottobine Store. He had worked at Wampler Foods as a security guard and for the U.S. Forest Service under the senior program. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved the mountains, hunting and fishing. He was a past member of Virginia Bear Hunters Association and American Kennel Club.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marshall Hilbert and Gordon Hilbert, Jr.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Hilbert of Monterey and Jeff Hilbert of Timberville; four sisters, Mildred Shiflet of Bridgewater, Nancy Huffman of Bridgewater, Shirley Ann Plaugher of Dayton and Carolyn Meyer and her husband, John of Bridgewater; two brothers, Weldon Hilbert and his wife, Cynthia of Dayton and John Hilbert and his wife, Mary Ann of Dayton; a sister-in-law, Brenda Hilbert of Harrisonburg and 23 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater by the Rev. Darren Massey and Rev. Randy Cosner with visitation following.
The body was cremated at his request.
