Charles Lewis "Mutt" Dawson, 94 of Monterey and Highland County's last surviving World War I Veteran, died Sunday morning, Sept 11, 1988 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem after a lengthy illness. 

He was born on June 1, 1894 at McDowell, the son of Morgan and Clara (Douglas) Dawson. 

He served as a teamster in the Army during World War I. Following the war, he returned to Highland County, where he was a farmer. He attended the Methodist Church. 

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Malone Dawson.

 A service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Obaugh Funeral Home, with the Rev. C. William Cox officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Staunton.

Pallbearers will be Ralph, Carl, Earl, Wayne and Charles Wilson and Monroe Anderson.

The family will receive friends from 7:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in McDowell.
