Darlene Sue (Steele) Malcolm, 82, of McDowell, passed away, Friday, November 11, 2022 at Augusta Health.

She was born April 1, 1940, in Roanoke, the fifth child of John Alexander and Bessie Lee (Garst) Steele. After her father passed away when she was young, she lived for several years at the Methodist Children’s Home in Richmond. Following that, she lived with her foster parents, Carl and Mabel Gutshall in Monterey for several years. On August 30, 1958, she married Ronald Thomas Malcolm, who proceeded her in death on April 28, 2008.

Darlene spent most of her life caring for her family and working on the farm, but was also employed by Aileen, and the Highland County Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher. She loved tending her flower and vegetable gardens, and also enjoyed baking, at which she excelled. She was a member of McDowell Presbyterian Church and also attended Hiner Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Newberry and husband, Gene of Cape Coral, Fla.; son, Joseph Malcolm and wife, Koressa of McDowell; grandchildren, Kalyn and Kaci Newberry of Cape Coral, Fla., Roy and wife, Christine of Plano, Texas, Rachael Carden and husband, Derrick of Bothell, Wa.; sister, Nancy Bryant of Mechanicsville; as well as a special caregiver, her niece Beverly Thompson and husband, Richard of McDowell.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Jack and Bobby Steele; and sisters Frances Stanley and Dorothy Steele.

A graveside memorial service will be held 2 p.m, Sunday, November 20th in McKendree Cemetery, officiated by pastor Jeff Fike.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to United Methodist Family Services at UMFS, attn. Development Office, 3900 W. Broad Street, Richmond, Va. 23230; or to a charity of your choice.
