Donald McCaig

May 1, 1940 — November 11, 2018

Donald Robert McCaig, 78, of Williamsville, died Saturday, November 11, 2018 at his home on Yucatec Farm.

Born May 1, 1940 in Butte, MT, Donald was the son of the late Donald John and Mable Viola (Nelson) McCaig.

After his time in the Marine Corps, Donald graduated from the University of Montana.  He did graduate work at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and taught philosophy at Wayne State University in Detroit.  He left the academic life to write advertising copy in New York, where he won a number of awards for notable campaigns.

Donald was a writer by trade, and a farmer when he had time.  His real passion was training and sheepdog trialing with his Border Collies.

He traveled extensively in Great Britain, Australia, the former Yugoslavia and the United States, doing research, promoting his books, acquiring his dogs and running his many Border Collies in trials.  But Highland County was his heart’s home

Surviving family members include his wife and life-long friend, Anne (Ashley) McCaig; his son of his first marriage, Jon McCaig of Goldens Bridge, NY; sister, Carol Butler of Seattle, WA; nieces, Jennifer and Katy Butler of Seattle, WA; as well as Rachael Ashley-Layton of North Bend, OR.

A funeral service was conducted 11 a.m., Friday, November 16, 2018 at Williamsville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Punker Robertson.  Following the service Donald was laid to rest in the homestead cemetery overlooking Yucatec Farm.

Active pallbearers included Barry and Timmy Marshall, Ronnie Hodge, Billy Web, Bob Lockridge, Mel Herwald, Gary Tingley, and Rob Robertson

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Highland County Humane Society, PO Box 458, Monterey, VA, or the Highland SPCA, PO Box 6, Monterey, VA 24465.
