Dorothy "Dottie" Gray Halterman

Dorothy “Dottie” Gray (Hiner) Halterman, age 86, of Monterey, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2026 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

She was born in Monterey, March 15, 1940, a daughter of the late William “Will” Wesley and Lillian Florence (White) Hiner.

On February 6, 1960, she married Ezra Gay Halterman, who preceded her in death on November 16, 2025.

A devout Christian, Dottie was member of The Church of God, where she served as the church secretary. Dottie enjoyed taking rides into Monterey with her husband (and dog), there they would park and spend many happy hours visiting with friends and acquaintances. In recent years, she enjoyed time spent solving word search and jigsaw puzzles, or simply sitting on her front porch listening to the birds and being as close to nature as possible.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Eddie Halterman in 1976.

She is survived by her son, Daniel “Danny” Halterman and wife, Barbara of Greensboro, N.C.; sister, Marie Rexrode of Monterey; brother G.W. Hiner of Riverton, WV; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell with pastor William “Andy” Botkin officiating. Burial will follow in Monterey Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be friends in attendance.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
