MONTEREY, VA Dorothy "Doris" Ruth Vandevander, 81, of Monterey, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2015 at her home. She was born August 5, 1933 in Blue Grass a daughter of the late Russell Edward and Mary Emma (Ervine) Bowers. A homemaker, she had also worked as a cook at High's Restaurant, Maple Restaurant, the Highland Inn, as well as the high school and elementary school and she did housekeeping. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers and was an avid NASCAR, UVA Basketball and Cowboys Football fan. She was a past member of the Church of God of Prophecy Church. Mrs. Vandevander was preceded in death by her sister, Mona Helmick and her brother, Russell Judy Bowers. She is survived by her husband, Arnold Vandevander, whom she married October 27, 1951; two daughters, Carolyn "Kay" Wright and husband, Johnny of Franklin, WV and Elsie "Mae" Hazelwood and husband, David of Charlottesville; two sons, David Wayne Vandevander of Monterey and Bobby W. Vandevander and wife, Clara of Blue Grass; eight grandchildren, including Charles "Cliff" Clifton Vandevander, whom she reared, Melissa Wright Hull, James Wright, Julie Wright Hartman, Genia Gail Adkins-Towler, Timmy Lee Adkins, Dacy Cesar and Diana Geraghty; four step-grandchildren, Lisa Finney, Kimberly Claytor, Ashley Robertson and Derrick Ross; eleven great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; her brother, Melvin Bowers of Franklin, WV and sister, Thelma Arbogast of Richmond. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. The family will hold interment at a later date. Active pallbearers will be Roger Arbogast, Raymond Smith, Alan Puffenbarger, Jim Pennington, Russell Hull and Jerry Moats. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 267, Monterey, VA 24465.
