Douglas Varner

MONTEREY, VA Douglas Bickley Varner, 78, of Monterey passed away Saturday, November 2, 2013. He was born December 14, 1934 in Monterey a son of the late James Russell "Ackie" and Lucy Mae (Smith) Varner. Mr. Varner retired from Highland County Public Schools, after 47 years of service as a janitor and substitute bus driver. He would often transport students on various class and ball trips, and drove the WRE bus. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Doug was a devoted and loving family man, making sure everyone was taken care of before himself. He enjoyed playing and listening to blue grass music, gardening, cutting wood, hunting ginseng and just watching airplanes and helicopters. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Mae (Wimer) Varner, whom he married on May 16, 1959; two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and David Lotts of Monterey, Lisa and Pete White of Mustoe; granddaughter, Tiffany Michelle White and grandson, Corey Douglas White, both of Mustoe; six sisters, Betty White of Orange City, FL, Lena Lou Miller of Staunton, Maxine Dever and Jo Ann Hull, both of Monterey, Carol Varner of Lawrenceville, GA and Ruth Varner of Bexley, OH; uncle, Robert "Bob" Varner of Waynesboro and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Hensley and his brother, David Varner. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m., Thursday, November 7, 2013 in Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Pastor Chip Hill and the Rev. Erin Geoffrion officiating. Inurnment will follow in Monterey Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Sam Colaw, Charlie Simmons, Larry Propst, Fred Whitelaw, Bradley Hull, Scott Hull, Alan Hull, Alan Puffenbarger, Kermit Arbaugh and Sheriff Tim Duff.
