Elijah Halterman

December 26, 1921 — October 27, 2006

Elijah “Paul” Halterman, age 84, of Monterey, died Friday, October 27, 2006 at The Springs Nursing Home.  He was born December 26, 1921 a son of the late Albert Mercer and Effie Annis (Key) Halterman.  He was reared by Alvie Brown and Orpha Halterman.  Mr. Halterman was a partner in Halterman Brothers Construction and a farmer. He had served on the Soil Conservation District for Highland County and was a former member of the Thorny Bottom United Methodist Church.  He was a lifelong resident of Highland County.  He had been cared for at the Springs Nursing Center since February 2005 due to declining health.

Mr. Halterman was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Clark Halterman.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years,, Kathleen Lowry Halterman of Monterey; a daughter and son-in-law, Daisy and Tony Van Pelt of Harrisonburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Cathy Halterman of Monterey; a brother, Ezra Halterman of Monterey; two sisters, Mary Smith of Stuarts Draft and Ruth Weaver of Raphine.  He was very close to his three grandchildren, Amy Halterman of Troutville, Travis Halterman of Monterey and Christina Van Pelt of Harrisonburg.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 29, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. Michael Sullivan.  Burial will be in the Blue Grass Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Travis Halterman, Elmer Halterman, Larry Cohron, Charlie Waggoner, Larry Waggoner, Allen Lowry, Robin Vance and Marlin Rexrode.  Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m., Sunday, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, VA or Highland County Volunteer Fire Dept., c/oSteve Sweitzer, P.O. Box 267, Monterey, VA 24465.
