Ellen Stephenson Johnson

Ellen Stephenson Johnson, 99, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at Seaton-Chesterfield.

She was born October 9, 1923 in Monterey, the daughter of Meade White and Bonnie Kate (Maloy) Stephenson.

Mrs. Johnson graduated from Monterey High School in 1940 and would go on to Mary Washington College, earning a Business Degree.  Following graduation, she worked as a legal secretary and was married to Roy Ernest Johnson in 1946. 

Mrs. Johnson was a former member of Forest Hill Presbyterian Church in Richmond, as well as Windsorview Garden Club. She will be remembered for her special sense of humor, love of nature and pets, and interest in family history.  Additionally, she was an avid fan of Elvis Presley, collecting all things Elvis and in her most recent years loved to say “Alexa, Play Elvis Presley.”  Above all Mrs. Johnson was a loving wife and excellent mother to her sons.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roy Johnson; her two sons, Robert Emmet and Dr. Stephen Roy Johnson; as well as her brother, William Emmet “Bill” Stephenson.

She is survived by her three nieces, Gena (Stephenson) Tanner, Patti (Stephenson) Spencer, and Karen Williams; nephew, Wayne Johnson, M.D.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Crickenberger) Stephenson, her caregivers, Dave Fore, Chelsy Acosta, and John Sheehan all of Richmond; as well as her dear friend, Mary Stark of Pella, Iowa.

A graveside funeral will be held 2 p.m., Monday, March 6, 2023 in Monterey Cemetery with the Rev. Les LaPrade officiating.
