Ellen Sue (Harold) Puffenbarger, 82, of Hightown, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2021, surrounded by family at her home.
She was born in Monterey on December 17, 1938, a daughter of the late Daisy Enid (Hull) and Charles Roscoe Harold. On December 25, 1954, Sue married the love of her life, Dareld Gene Puffenbarger.
Sue was a member of the Blue Grass United Methodist Church and an active member of the community until recent years when her health started to decline. After marriage, Dareld and Sue moved to Staunton for a year but soon returned to their forever home in Hightown. Sue worked at the Aileen plant until it closed, then took on her role as a full-time mother and farmer’s wife. She was known to make at least 25 loaves of salt rising bread to deliver to customers all over the county. Sue loved to garden, can her bounty and also enjoyed filling her porch with flowers each summer.
One who loved her family dearly, Sue spent many times preparing big meals to welcome family for the weekend. She was one of eight brothers and sisters, whom she loved being close with. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, spoiling them every chance she got. Sue had a great sense of humor, loved telling jokes and would talk to just about anyone. She enjoyed going to the fair to play bingo just so she could visit and see everyone. Sue loved to craft and make things to sell during the maple festival, as well as making things to decorate her home. She especially loved the holidays and would make homemade candy and cookies for Christmas and Easter. Everyone in the family always had a special decorated Easter egg with their name on it. If you ever visited Sue and Dareld’s home, you were sure to be offered something homemade.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dareld; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Charlie George of Upper Tract, WV and Melissa and Brian “Bubba” Moyers of Hightown; granddaughters, Leslie Bowers and husband, Shaun, Reshella Leary and husband, Brian, Laura George and Daisy Moyers; grandson, Kaleb Moyers; great-granddaughter, Ava Bowers; great-grandson, Hudson Leary; brother, Charles R.
