MONTEREY, VA Gailya O. "Gaye" Herold, 79, of Monterey passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Augusta Health. She was born July 13, 1934 in Cox's Chapel, Virginia, a daughter of the late Enoch and Ati (Cox) Osborne. A graduate of Radford College, Mrs. Herold moved to Highland in 1957 from Independence, Virginia, where she would serve as the county's Home Demonstration Agent. After raising her children she joined her husband, Jack in operating H & H Cash Store in Monterey, where she remained until her retirement in 2011. An avid crafter, Gaye was gifted in sewing, stitchery, quilting, and home canning. Additionally, she was widely known and highly regarded for her maple fudge. Mrs. Herold was a member of Highland Homemakers, Highland Mixed Bowling League, as well as member, past Elder, and former pianist of Monterey Presbyterian Church. On June 7, 1958, she married Jack Hull Herold, who preceded her in death July 26, 2004. She was also predeceased by her brother, Paul Osborne, and sister, Geraldine Osborne. She is survived by two sons, Michael E. Herold and wife, Tomi, and Kenneth H. Herold all of Monterey; her daughter, Teresa Fitzwater and partner, Glenn Bouley of Staunton; four grandchildren, Shelly Simmons, Rachel Ross, Emma and Jack Herold; two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Brynleigh Stacy; sisters-in-law, Jean Harmon, Marge Rexrode, Mamie Herold, Sue Puffenbarger and husband, Dareld, and brother-in-law, Charles Harold. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Monterey Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Melissa Litrel Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in Monterey Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dareld Puffenbarger, Fred Frye, Curtie Gutshall, Tony Marshall, Tim Swecker, and Kirk Billingsley. Honorary pallbearers will be friends in attendance as well as members of the Highland Mixed Bowling League. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
