Gary Wayne Wimer, 60, of McDowell, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, November 17, 2022 while helping his dad in Circleville, WV.
He was born in Harrisonburg on July 25, 1962, a son of Ambers Wimer of Circleville, WV and the late Frances (Kisamore) Wimer.
One who never met a stranger or said “no,” Gary was willing to help anyone who asked. He was a lifetime member of the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department and a very active member of the Stonewall Ruritan Club. Gary was known to many as the “onion man,” who was essential to the success of the club’s annual onion fundraiser.
Always looking for a laugh, Gary was known for picking on the kids (and adults). He loved rough housing and helping the children prepare for tubing and sledding up the hollow. Somehow, Gary was the one always getting hurt. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, digging ramps, looking for morels and most especially, working on derby cars with his sons. He will also be missed during apple butter stirring, butchering, and maple syrup season. Above all, he will be remembered as a loving son, husband, father, pappy, brother, uncle, and friend to many.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife of 37 years, Wanda “Bobbie” (Booth) Wimer of McDowell; two sons, Adam Wimer of McDowell and Dusty Wimer of Monterey; daughter-in-law, Christie Wimer of Monterey; sisters, Carolyn Lambert of Singers Glen and Charlotte Vance and husband, Brison of Circleville, WV; brother, Rodney “Buddy” Wimer and wife, Alice of Petersburg, WV; three very special grandchildren, Makayla and Grayson Wimer of Remington and Summer Wimer of Monterey; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as close friends, Phil and Charlotte Lucas, Leonard and Linda Simmons and Deena Vess.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Les LaPrade officiating. Burial will follow in the Wimer Cemetery on Hawbush Road, Circleville, WV.
Active pallbearers will be Derek Smith, Leonard Simmons, David Armstrong, Billy Hiner, Eric and Scottie Armstrong, Craig Smith and Grady Moats.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Stonewall Ruritan Club and McDowell Volunteer Fire Department.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Monday, November 21 at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gary Wimer Memorial Fund, c/o Blue Grass Valley Bank, P.O. Box 516, Monterey, Va. 24465.
