George Smith Sr.

May 26, 1920 — September 10, 2010

George Albert Smith, Sr., 90, a lifetime resident of Hightown, passed away Friday, September 10, 2010 at Alleghany Regional Hospital.  He was born May 26, 1920 in Hightown a son of the late Albert and Mary E. (Rexrode) Smith.

Throughout his life, Mr. Smith worked as a farmer, carpenter, and sawmill owner/operator.  During WWII, he served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Navy.  He was a member of Hightown United Methodist Church, a trustee since 1954, a former Sunday School Superintendant and over the years had completed multiple renovation projects to the church.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Virginia (Judy) Smith and a sister, Mary Catherine Simmons.

He is survived by three daughters, Mary Frances Hise of Waynesboro, Vicki Lynn Wood of Staunton, Susan Burns and husband, Jerry of Monterey; two sons, Jerry Smith of Mt. Jackson and George A. Smith, Jr. of Hightown; nine grandchildren, Candace Thompson, Charity Cooper, Tracy Smith, Lance, Luke, Lee and Ben Hise, Faith Sadler, Tristan Hartman and twelve great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, September 13, 2010 at Hightown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Andre Crummett and the Rev. Richard Gibson officiating.

Burial will in Hightown Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
