Gertrude “Gertie” G. Johnston, 87, of Monterey died 6:30 p.m. Friday (May 3, 1991) at King’s Daughters’ Hospital.

She was born Feb. 8, 1904 at Mustoe, a daughter of John Robert and Altie (Slayton) Griffin.

She was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church and had been employed by the Highland County Craft Shop for a number of years until the time of her illness.

Her husband, Edgar O. Johnston, died May 6, 1969.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Edgar Johnston Jr. and Harry Robert Johnston.

Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte J. Robertson of Staunton; a son, Elmer L. Johnston of Richmond; two sisters, Janet Grogg of Hightown and Grace Griffin of Monterey; a brother, Richard Griffin of Staunton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service was conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Revs. Jerry Ginn and C. William Cox, with burial at Monterey Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Varner, Jack Herold, E.W. Cox Jr., Tom and Jack Botkin, Jerry Stanley, Curtis Rexrode and Frank Wilson.
