Gladys Hooke

Gladys Virginia Hooke, 92, of Hightown, died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Augusta Medical Center.  She was born January 4, 1915 at Mountain Grove, a daughter of the late Frederick Harrison and Cornelia Ruth (Warwick) Hicks.

Mrs. Hooke was a 1932 graduate of Valley High School in Bath County.  She was a homemaker, a wonderful mother, cook and an avid outdoors person.  She was a member and honorary elder of Pisgah Presbyterian Church and played piano at various churches.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy M. Gutshall on May 22, 1962; her second husband, Charles L. Hooke on December 25, 1982 and by three brothers, Clyde, Ralph and Willard Hicks.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jane G. and Clem Kincaid of Monterey; a son and daughter-in-law, Roy “Sonny” and Karen H. Gutshall of Monterey; a step-daughter, Anna Hooke Miller of Middlebrook; a sister, Lucille Miano of Lynchburg; a brother, H. Merle Hicks of Richmond; seven grandchildren, Susan Murray, Dennis Kincaid and Lisa Kodger, all of Monterey, Angela Crigler of Monterey, Jay Gutshall of Richmond, Pamela Hoffman of Staunton and Karla Obaugh of McDowell; a step-grandson, Clement Miller of Middlebrook; eleven great-grandchildren, Sarah McCarty, Vincent and Rachel Murray, Samantha Kincaid, Matthew and Karen Hoffman, Amanda Crigler, Erica Ruleman, Kate, Kari and Rhonda Obaugh and two great-great-granddaughters, Allison and Ashley Ruleman.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2007 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. C. William “Bill” Cox.   Burial will be in Hamilton Chapel Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Kincaid, Jay Gutshall, Grey Lee, Lynn and Jimmy Hicks, Rodney Miano, Arreon Murray, Les Kodger, Gary Crigler and Kyle Obaugh.

Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Boesch, Andre Crummett, Jerry and Wickie Hooke, Doug Gutshall, Jim, Holmes and Ben Stephenson, Herb Lightner, Jacob Hevener and friends and neighbors attending the service.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
