Glenn Botkin Jr.

Glenn Botkin Jr., 78, of McDowell, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 surrounded by his family at Kings Daughters Community Health & Rehabilitation in Staunton.

He was born in McDowell June 24, 1940, a son of the late Nellie Gay Hoover and Glenn Botkin.

He married Selma Fleisher on July 16, 1960, who preceded him in death on September 6, 1996.

A 1958 graduate of Franklin High School, Glenn was an accomplished farmer, school bus driver, carpenter and custom sheep shearer, who placed second in the state champion in 1976. He was also co-owner of Stonewall Milk Haulers, board member of the Highland County Farm Bureau, charter member of Highland County Young Farmers and former chair of the Highland County School Board.

Glenn was a member of the Doe Hill United Methodist Church, where he served as youth leader and Sunday school teacher.

He will be remembered for his love of farming and sheep shearing, John Deere tractors and hunting, especially turkey, deer and raccoons, but above all he will be remembered as a hardworking, loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Galen Botkin.

Glenn is survived by a son, Stephen Botkin and wife, Lori of McDowell;  four daughters, Sharon Botkin of Bridgewater, Dianne Gelzhiser and husband, Bill of Pittsburg, Pa., Anita McCray and husband, Mac of Churchville and Carol Bowden and husband, Chip of Singers Glen; grandchildren Kari Sponaugle and husband, Michael, Sam Botkin, Susanna Gelzhiser, Daniel Gelzhiser, Eric Gelzhiser and wife, Liz, Robin Gelzhiser and Wyatt “Hooch” McCray; great-grandsons, Jasper and Clu Sponaugle; brother, Jerry Botkin and wife, Debbie of Blue Grass; sister, Martha Kimble and husband, Carl Jr. of Sugar Grove, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Arlene Botkin of Sugar Grove, W.Va.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank his caregivers for their exceptional care over the last year, Sharon Moyers, Mac McCray and Lauren Coceano.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Doe Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. Chilton McPheeters and Adam Blagg officiating. Interment will follow in Totten Chapel Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wyatt McCray, Sam Botkin, Scotty Armstrong, Gary Simmons, Matt Blagg, Dean Beverage, Jimmy Sponaugle and Mike Armstrong.

The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Obaugh Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Doe Hill United Methodist Church, c/o Gary Lyle Simmons, 6755 Jack Mountain Road, Doe Hill, Va. 24433 or to the Selma Botkin 4H Memorial Scholarship, c/o Va. Cooperative Extension Office, P.O. Box 528, Monterey, Va. 24465.
