Hannah Gum

April 21, 1920 — December 29, 2015

MONTEREY, VA Hannah Mae Gum, 95, of Monterey passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at the home of her son in Staunton. She was born April 21, 1920 in Monterey a daughter of the late Charles Arthur and Leola May (Hiner) Anderson. Mrs. Gum was a member of Monterey United Methodist Church; attended Hiner Church of the Brethren and was a past member of Central Methodist Church in Staunton and Seybert Chapel near Monterey. She attended Monterey High School and retired in 1980 from the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, where she was a cafeteria waitress and a house mother. She had also worked in Staunton for many years as a caregiver for the elderly. She was a very devoted and hard-working wife and mother and will be missed very much by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She belonged to the Highland Senior Citizens and very much enjoyed all her friends and things they did together. She had many devoted friends who looked after many of her needs as she lost her eyesight. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Luther Trimble in 1964 and her second husband, Alvie Gum in 2003. She was also predeceased by two daughters, Maxine Puffenbarger and Barbara Henkel; two sisters and four brothers. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Eavey of Verona and Joyce Ann Landram of Staunton; two sons, Melvin "Mel" Trimble of Springfield and Staunton and Donald Trimble of Georgetown, SC; eight grandchildren, Kent Trimble, Susan Matteson, Steve Puffenbarger, Chris Henkel, Shri Henkel, Kevin Eavey, Kelly Landram and Sean Trimble; seven great-grandchildren, Hunter and Ragen Puffenbarger, Branda Eavey, Jonathan, Andrew and Eric Matteson and Nicholas Trimble; and one great-great-grandson, Collin Eavey. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2016 at Obaugh Funeral Home with Dr. Daniel Freed officiating. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jack Beverage, Dean Beverage, Chris Henkel, Kent Trimble, Jonathan Matteson, Andrew Matteson, Steve Puffenbarger and Kevin Eavey. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Thelma Beverage, Anna Lee Samples and Kathy Beverage. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Obaugh Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland Medical Center, P.O. Box 490, Monterey or Highland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, VA 24465.
