Homer Simmons

HOT SPRINGS, VA Homer Albert Simmons, 74, of Hot Springs passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Bath Community Hospital. He was born January 8, 1940 near Blue Grass a son of the late Russell Dice and Mabel Alice (Grogg) Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a member of Ashwood United Methodist Church and Men's Club of the Church. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Westvaco after 37 1/2 years of service. Mr. Simmons was also a self-employed roofer, NASCAR fan and loved to hunt and fish. He is survived by his wife, Nora Elizabeth (Chestnut) Simmons, P.O. Box 653, Hot Springs, whom he married on June 12, 1961; brother, Raymond Dice Simmons of Shreveport, LA; nephew, Logy Anzures and two nieces, Lynn and Carla Anzures. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Wilma Anzures. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Ashwood United Methodist Church with the Pastor Vivian M. Utz and Rev. Lynn Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Carl Chestnut, Berlie Chestnut, David Chestnut, Dickie Kershner, Whimpy Taylor, Lonnie Martin, Jimmy Gillispie and Jimmy Cauley. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Club of Ashwood United Methodist Church, Rodney Chestnut, Freddie Harold and Johnny McManamay. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and friends may call Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home or anytime at the residence, 146 Wilkinson Ave, Hot Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashwood United Methodist Church, c/o Betty Harold, treasurer, 54 Methodist Lane, Hot Springs, VA 24445 or Mountain Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o Janice O'Farrell, 5792 Mountain Valley Rd, Warm Springs, VA 24484.
