Houston Smith

January 27, 1924 — November 8, 2014

MONTEREY, VA Houston Turner Smith, 90, of Monterey, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014. He was born January 27, 1924 in Staunton a son of the late Elva M. Smith. Mr. Smith was owner and operator of H.T. Smith & Son Excavating and a farmer. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star while serving in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member and commander of VFW Post 4989. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt in the Laurel Fork area. He is survived by his son, Charles Smith and Sherry Wolfe; grandson, Lyle Smith; partner, Judy Skeen, all of Monterey; step-daughter, Sarah Skeen of Richmond and step-son, Sam Skeen of Staunton. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2014 in Monterey Cemetery with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. There will be no public viewing or visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Highland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, VA or Highland County Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 267, Monterey, VA 24465.
