Jean Harmon

September 19, 1931 — October 6, 2014

SPRINGFIELD Jean Harold Harmon passed away, Friday, October 3rd at her home in Springfield, Virginia. Ms. Harmon was born Sept. 19, 1931, in Highland County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Charles Roscoe and Daisy Enid (Hull) Harold. Upon her graduation from Monterey H.S. in 1950, she moved to Washington D.C. She served as the personal secretary to the Honorable Joel T. Broyhill and spent 22 years on Capitol Hill attending to the constituents of Virginia's 10th Congressional District. When Mr. Broyhill left Congress in 1974, she continued working with him as part of MT Broyhill & Sons until her retirement in 1999. While the DC area became the home where she raised 4 children, her heart remained deeply rooted in Highland County. Her beautiful country home in Hightown, VA served as respite from life in hectic Washington, DC. The beauty of the mountains during autumn made this her favorite place to be during this time of year. She cherished her moments there and particularly loved taking her grandchildren for long weekends. Her faith ran deep as she was steadfastly devoted to Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandria, Virginia where she served as a long-time member and President of the Alter Guild. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Hess and Mamie K. Eagle and three brothers, Leo G. Harold, Jack H. Herold, and Warren G. (Mike) Herald. Survivors include four children: Christopher Harmon and his wife Maria of Fort Valley, VA, Jeff Harmon and his wife Denise of McKinney, TX, Timothy Harmon and his wife Lori of Springfield, VA, and Lisa Duncan and her husband Mark of Fairfax, VA, as well as thirteen loving grandchildren: Jamie Valentine, Kim Bottom, Michael Harmon, Mark Harmon, Ryan Harmon, Jessica Harmon, Alec Pisoni, David Harmon, Calvin Duncan, Jacob Duncan, Timothy Harmon, Mark Patrick Duncan, and Cameron Harmon. Three siblings: Charles R. Harold Jr. of Fredericksburg, Margaret A. Rexrode of Centerville, and Sue Puffenbarger of Hightown. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 10, 2014 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Blue Grass with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating. Interment will follow in Monterey Cemetery.
