Jean Sullenberger

STAUNTON Jean (Stinnett) Sullenberger, 86, of the Legacy at North Augusta, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Augusta Health. She was born October 18, 1928 in Hot Springs, a daughter of the late Willie G. and Ethel V. Stinnett. During her early years, she made her home with her sister Clara and brother-in-law, Pierre Dufour in Hot Springs, VA where she attended Bath County Schools and graduated from Valley High School. She married Joe Sullenberger on Dec. 19, 1947 and moved to Monterey, VA. She and her husband operated Four Winds Restaurant in the late 1950's and early 1960's. She went on to work at First and Citizens Bank in Monterey for many years. She was a member of Monterey Presbyterian Church. During her years in Monterey, she was active in the Highland County Business and Professional Women's Club, the Monterey Garden Club, and the Highland County Chamber of Commerce. She served terms as President of each of these organizations. She also served on the Highland County Zoning and Planning Commission as well as Monterey Town Council. Jean and Joe moved to Staunton, VA in 1985. She worked at Planters Bank until her retirement. She was a member and past President of the Gypsy Hill Charter of the AARP and was an active volunteer at the Augusta Health Thrift Shop. She attended Linden Heights Baptist Church in Staunton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Sullenberger; two sisters, Clara Dufour and Lucille Stinnett; and two brothers, Aubrey Stinnett and Eddie "Pete" Stinnett. Mrs. Sullenberger is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Quinton James of Kill Devil Hills, NC, and Melanie and Harry Lunsford of Staunton; son, Blair Sullenberger of Mount Sidney; grandchildren, Wes James of Lubbock, TX, Matthew and Brian Lunsford of Staunton, and Hilary Sullenberger of Richmond; brother, Hansel Stinnett of Ava, MO; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special, loyal, and devoted friend, Faye Shelton. A graveside service will be conducted 10:00am, Wednesday, April 15, 2015 in Monterey Cemetery. Active pallbearers include Brian, Matthew, and Bryce Lunsford, Henry and Robin Sullenberger, and Randy Richardson. Additionally, a memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, at Linden Heights Baptist Church, 371 Linden Drive, Staunton, also on Wednesday the 15th. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at Linden Heights. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so throughout the day and into the evening Tuesday, April 14th at Obaugh Funeral Home.
