Rev. Jerry Roger Wimer

May 13, 1948 — February 24, 2024

New Bern, NC

Rev. Jerry Roger Wimer, age 75, of New Bern, NC, went to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern.

Born May 13, 1948 in Highland County, Jerry was a son of the late Johnny Lee and Lydia Ann (Propst) Wimer. He graduated from Highland High School with the Class of 1967, and married Rachel Ann Simmons on the 4th of July in 1971.  For 47 years, Jerry and Rachel would devote their lives to one another, as well as promoting their church and Lord until her passing on March 31, 2020.

He served as a pastor with The Church of God in several churches throughout North Carolina, and was passionate in his calling. A very talented musician, Jerry enjoyed sharing his love for the Lord through singing and playing the piano and guitar while in church.  He also was passionate in charitable acts of kindness, raising financial resources for World Mission through his selling of handmade crafts, crocheted quilts and blankets, and homemade candies of his own making.

Outside of the pulpit, Jerry enjoyed time spent fishing, visiting with friends and church members, and simply sharing his life with Rachel. Many will also remember Jerry for his selfless nature, good humor, and the fondness he had for his pet cats. Additionally, he always held a special place in his heart for his home in Highland County.  And, although his health prevented his return, Jerry never stopped talking of his desire to return to the mountains of his youth.

In addition to his late parents and wife, he was predeceased by his siblings that he loved so dearly.   They include his brothers, Troy, Elbert, Dennis, and Rev. Donald Wimer; and sisters, Rev. Ethel Mae Reamey and Turetha Hiner; as well as nieces, “Cookie” Wimer and Sharon Billingsley.

Jerry is survived by his nephews, William, Ray Sr., and Troy LeRoy Wimer, as well as Jerry Wimer and David and Gideon Hiner; nieces, Faye Creasey, Jenise Dixon, Lori Russel, Juanita Fellow, Alice Turk, Frances Hiner, and Vera Auble; sister-in-law, Rebecca Bibb Mawyer of Ruckersville; as well as his brothers and sisters in Christ.

The funeral service for Rev. Jerry Wimer will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell, VA with Pastor Mark Lamm officiating and assisted by Pastors Melvin McGriff and Vernon Morris.  A committal service will follow, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife in Blue Grass Cemetery.

The staff of Obaugh Funeral Home will receive friends and family wishing to pay their respects on Thursday, February 29th, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
