John Beverage

February 9, 1919 — January 18, 2017

John Steve Beverage, 97, of Monterey, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.   He was born February 9, 1919 in Highland County a son of the late Olen Steve and Mattie Mae (Ryder) Beverage.

A U.S. Army Veteran, Mr. Beverage served in Europe during WWII. His previous employment included BARC Electric; Construction on Highland High School and Beverage Construction.  He retired from Virginia Department of Transportation and also farmed.  Mr. Beverage was not afraid of hard work and always kept busy.  He was a member of Word of Faith Church and Highland VFW Post 9666.  He enjoyed fishing and especially the time spent with his family and friends.

Surviving family members include his wife, Gladys (Siron) Beverage, whom he married July 30, 1948; daughters, Shirley Wimer and husband, Vernon of Franklin, WV, Betty Arbaugh and husband, Lonnie of Monterey, Linda Arbaugh and husband, Dwight of Circleville, WV and Denita Pyle and husband, Todd of Fredericksburg; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons, which includes his special little buddy, Brady Mullins, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Beverage was preceded in death by his two grandsons, Wesley Arbaugh and Michael Wimer; and his siblings, Henry Beverage, Mary Rexrode, Eva Beverage, Dennis Beverage, Fred Beverage, Clarence Beverage, Ida Fleisher, Walter Beverage, Charles Beverage, William Beverage and Robert Beverage.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Obaugh Funeral Home with Pastor Chip Hill and Pastor Todd Pyle officiating.  Burial will follow in Beverage Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bob Beverage, Wayne Beverage, Jacob Pyle, Steven Arbaugh, Wyatt Arbaugh, Charles Varner, Stuart Simmons, Ronnie Pugh, Caden Arbaugh and Jason Arbaugh.

His grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Obaugh Funeral Home.
