John Hammer Mauzy

John Hammer Mauzy, 78, of Churchville passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at Augusta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville.

He was born January 20, 1945 in Highland County, a son of the late William Whitfield and Lily Grace (Harper) Mauzy. On October 30, 1971 he married Teresa Louise (Warner) who preceded him in death April 11, 2011.

An enthusiastic dancer, John loved good music.  He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter.  John will be remembered not only for his ability to do anything he turned his hand to, but also for his willingness to put his talents to use helping others. 

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Mauzy Grant and Betty Sue Mauzy Caricofe; as well as three brothers, George, Jack and Robert “Bob” Mauzy.

He is survived by two sons, Bill Mauzy and wife, Jessica of Nellysford and Joseph Mauzy of Churchville; grandson, Christopher Mauzy of Waynesboro; granddaughter, Hazel Mauzy; brother, Charles Mauzy and wife, Peggy of Staunton; as well as his companion and close friend, Freda Hedrick of Lyndhurst.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with pastor Sam Harper officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens, Staunton.

In addition to his sons, pallbearers will be Christopher Mauzy, Dwayne Mauzy, Lee Grant, and Duane Hylton.
