Joseph "Joey" Roberts

Joseph “Joey” Anderson Roberts, 15, of Burnsville, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born Oct. 24, 1995 at Low Moor, a son of Cletis A. Roberts Jr. and Virginia Katherine Nelson.

He was a sophomore at Bath County High School. He attended Burnsville United Methodist Church and was a junior member of the Burnsville Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, enjoyed riding his dirt bike and spending time with friends.

He is survived by his mother, Katherine Nelson of Rocky Mount; a sister, Jada Nelson of Rocky Mount; three brothers, Jessup Nelson of McDowell, and Jace and Jayden Nelson of Rocky Mount; paternal grandmother, with whom he made his home, Ester “Beanie” Roberts of Burnsville; maternal grandmother, Rowena Gail Mangum of Williamsville; great-grandmother, Esther Wooddell of Burnsville; aunts and their husbands, Deena and Danny Neil of Williamsville, Lori and Leonard Neil of Burnsville, Alecia Hise of Goshen, Susan and Bobby Conner of Monterey, and Toni Sloane of Salem; uncles, Edward Nelson Jr. and wife Melissa of Fincastle, and John Herron of Salem; cousins, Scottie, Laci and Peyton Neil, Chrissy Neil, Adam and Ashley Neil, Nicole, Roger and Clayton Smith, Laura Hise, Ethan Huffman, Brittany Hise, Chloe and Chance Nelson, Bobby and Susie Caudle, Emma Sloane, and Christopher Herron.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cletis Anderson Roberts Jr.; and grandfathers, Cletis A. Roberts Sr. and Edward Nelson Sr.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Donald Lee Altizer officiating.

Burial was in Burnsville Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Rob Beers, Eric Sorrells, Michael Hamilton, Christopher Herron, Russell Allen, Lucas and Gabe Wells, Tyler Fullen and Cole Plecker.

Honorary pallbearers were classmates and friends attending the service.
