Karla Anne (Koenig) Moats, age 61, of Sugar Grove, WV passed away unexpectedly, Monday, October 27, 2025 at Sentara RMH Medical Center.
She was born June 2, 1964 in St. Albans, New York, a daughter of Geraldine Reginald (Youmans) Koenig of Tucson, AZ and the late Charles Edward Koenig.
On April 2, 1983, she married James “Jim” Monroe Moats, her high school sweetheart. They enjoyed over 40 years of marriage together.
Employed as a Federal Police Officer, Karla loved life to the fullest, enjoying the pool practically year-round, travelling with her family, reading, and always singing and dancing. She was a fierce protector, who provided complete and unwavering support, care, and affection to her family. A ray of sunshine, Karla was the one who always looked on the brighter side and was the best story-teller. Karla was an incredibly hard worker and refused to give up in the face of adversity. Above all, Karla will be remembered for her bold, authentic personality and forever being the life of the party.
In addition to her mother and husband, Karla is survived by daughters, Tuesday BriAnne Simmons and husband, Brian of Wake Forest, NC and Montana Rayne Hise and husband, Troy of Monterey, VA; grandson, Cedar Monroe Simmons; sisters, Christina Derby and husband, Danny of Tucson, AZ, Heidi Mabe and husband, Jerry of Tucson, AZ and Lili Koenig of Chesapeake, VA; as well as a brother, Mark Koenig of San Diego, CA.
Karla was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Charles Eric Koenig.
Her family will commemorate Karla’s life privately at a later time.
