Kate (Beverage) Hiner, 92, of McDowell, passed away Monday, April 8, 2024 surrounded by her family at her home.
She was born in the Strait Creek community of Highland County on March 7, 1932, a daughter of the late Walter Ralph and Elizabeth (Ryder) Beverage. On February 20, 1951, she married Dick Maloy Hiner.
A homemaker in every possible way, Kate enjoyed gardening, canning, and baking. She liked to travel and shop with her family and friends, especially at thrift stores. Kate had a very strong work ethic, quick wit, beautiful smile and infectious laugh. A selfless woman, Kate was always willing to help those in need. She consistently ensured that her children’s needs were met and that they knew they were loved. Additionally, she was a loving and faithful wife, caring mother, and exceptional grandmother, who above all else adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Kate was predeceased by her sisters, Margaret “Diddle” Kiely, Charlotte “Dart” Swecker, and Mary “Fritz” Corbett.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Dick Hiner of McDowell; daughters, Ann Hiner Simmons and husband, Mike of Churchville, and Betty Sue Hiner of Fishersville; sons, William “Billy” Hiner of McDowell and James “Jimmy” Hiner and wife, Tammy of Augusta Springs; grandchildren, Daniel Propst, Dr. Katie Propst, Jonathan Eye, Matthew Eye, Travis Hiner, and Tabitha Ulmer; 12 great-grandchildren; lifelong friend, Wilma Obaugh of McDowell; as well as her beloved cat, Millie.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with pastor Mike Nay officiating. Burial will follow in McKendree Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Daniel Propst, Jonathan Eye, Matthew Eye, Travis Hiner, Keith Ulmer, and Doug Botkin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Stuart Neil, Jeff Shumate, Doug Siron, and Kyle Obaugh.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Friday, April 12th at the funeral home.
