Kyle Edward Almond, age 81, of Hightown, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
He was born November 24, 1944 in Appomattox, a son of the late David Wilson and Evelyn (Stewart) Almond. Kyle was a graduate of Appomattox High School, and went on to earn an associate degree in business from Bluefield College (now Bluefield University), and obtained his Bachelor of Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). Following graduation, Kyle volunteered for the United States Army and served as an infantry officer in Vietnam.
On July 15, 1972, he married Lynn Pritchard, who survives. Soon thereafter in 1973, the couple moved to Highland County, where he would work as an insurance advisor for Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance, a vocation he retained until his retirement in 2006. During that time, he was awarded the Ralph Stokes Award, which is the highest honor a Virginia Farm Bureau agent can achieve. Kyle forever treasured the life-long friendships he formed with his clients.
He was a member, finance chairman, and past trustee of the Monterey United Methodist Church. Kyle was also a dedicated member of the Monterey Lions Club, with over 50 years of service to his community. Additionally, he was a life member of V.F.W Post 9855 in Appomattox and a life member of the American Legion, Highland Post 155, where he served as adjutant for 20 years. Kyle also proudly served on the Board of Directors of First and Citizens Bank, and ultimately Summit Community Bank following their merger.
He and Lynn enjoyed traveling across the United States and abroad, but the place he most loved was Highland County, where he enjoyed working on his farm and visiting with his neighbors.
Predeceased family members include his parents; sister, Barbara Jeanne Shelton and her husband, Earl; brother, David Almond; and brother-in-law, Walter Pitsenbarger.
In addition to his wife, Lynn Almond, he is survived by his daughter, Erin May and husband, Michael of Fulks Run; two grandchildren, Zachary May of Fulks Run and Jenna May of Harrisonburg; sisters-in-law, Jane Pritchard of Garner, NC, Noni Yount and husband, Brad of Johns Island, SC, Sally Almond of Lynchburg; as well as a niece and several nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m., Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Monterey United Methodist Church with pastors Chip Hill and Bobbie Jo Gardener officiating. A committal service will follow in Monterey Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, as well as during a meal of fellowship following the committal at Monterey United Methodist Church.
