McDowell Larry Wayne Smith, age 55, of McDowell, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Smith was born January 23, 1959 in Harrisonburg, a son of the late Wilmer Carl and Irene (Ober) Smith. Mr. Smith was an employee with Highland County Solid Waste and Recycling and a member of the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed the outdoors, caring for his fish pond and flowers, truck pulls, and mowing grass. Above all, Larry loved his family and time spent playing with his grandson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Smith and Nancy Floyd; brother, Donald Smith; and grandson, Jordan Moats. Surviving family members include two sons, Eric Smith and wife, Santana of Goshen, and Derek Smith of McDowell; daughter, Kelly Moats and husband, Grady of McDowell; grandson, Braiden Moats; sisters, Yvonne Smith and companion, Roy Kisamore of Churchville, and Susan Simmons and husband, Dennis of Monterey; his brother, Wilmer Smith Jr. and wife, Coretta of Verona; special nephew, Roger Smith of Burnsville; as well as a special caregiver, Kay Smith of McDowell. A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Beth Pyles officiating. Interment will follow in McKendree Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home. Active pallbearers include Timmy Neil, David Neil, Josh Armstrong, Craig Smith, Mike Strickler, Jesse Lynn Eckard, Leonard Neil, and Steve Hamilton. Members of the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Larry Smith Memorial Fund, c/o McDowell Volunteer Fire Department, 527 Windrush Lane, Doe Hill, VA 24433.
