Leona Hammer Gutshall

Leona Hammer Gutshall, 79, of Monterey, died Sunday evening, March 6, 1994 in King's Daughters' Hospital.

She was born January 20, 1915 at Blue Grass,  and was the daughter of the late Luther and Ester (Waybright) Hammer.

On April 27, 1940, she married Andrew D. Gutshall, who preceded her in death on June 8, 1990.

She was a member of the Monterey United Methodist Church and a life member of the United Methodist Women.

She was educated in the Highland schools, Dunsmore Business College and Madison College. She taught in the Highland School System for 18 years and served as clerk of the Highland Combined Courts until her retirement in 1985.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Paige Mary and John Wagner of Staunton; two grandchildren, William A. Wagner and Leisa P. Wagner, both of Staunton; two sisters, Marie Newman of Staunton and Virginia H. Rexrode of Franklin, WV; three brothers, Glen Hammer of Monterey, Cyrus Hammer of Staunton and James Hammer of Waynesboro.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, John F., Robert, Leonard, Luther and William Hammer; and a sister, Gladys Newman.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Revs. Robert Haley, Jerry Ginn and Donald Long. Burial will be in the Monterey Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bill Bratton, Robert G. Hammer, Eddie Mack Hammer, Carroll Dice Hammer, Charles Rexrode, John Reynolds, Gene Hammer and Harold Newman.

Honorary pallbearers will be former students she taught at the Monterey High School.
