Mabel Terry

Mabel H. Terry, 94, of Monterey, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at her residence.  She was born September 7, 1913 at Mustoe a daughter of the late Patrick Reese and Bertha Lillian (Gutshall) Hiner.

Mrs. Terry was a member and the first woman Elder of the Monterey Presbyterian Church.  She was past president of the Presbyterian Women of the Church and served on the Lexington Presbytery Council.  She considered her career being a loving mother and homemaker.  As a young woman, she worked at the Monterey Hotel and hotels in North Carolina and Florida.  She was an active volunteer with the Chamber of Commerce, the local schools and the public library.

On June 19, 1940, she married, H.H. “Benny” Terry, who preceded her in death on June 26, 1982. She was also predeceased by a son, Steve Terry on April 21, 2000; three brothers, Raymond, Richard and Jesse Hiner and three sisters, Lillian Folks, Evelyn Craig and Kathleen Carpenter.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bertha Jo “Joey” and Don Caruthers of Leesburg and Donna Kay and Michael Bedwell of Locust Grove; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy “Dot” Terry of Monterey; four granddaughters, Kimberly Alexander, Robyn Fant, Miranda Redinger and Erin Brittain; six great-grandchildren, Austin, Grant and Rachel Alexander and Tyler, Drew and Hunter Fant; a brother, Stanley Hiner of Mechansville and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m., Sunday, May 25, 2008 at the Monterey Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lester LaPrade and Rev. C. William “Bill” Cox officiating.  Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be her nephews and her nieces’ husbands, Ron and Richard Craig, Bill, Jim and Wayne Hiner, Jim Carey, Lawrence Wilson and Barry Bowles.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
