Martin Ellis King

Martin Ellis King, 93, of Monterey died Friday evening, April 29, 1988 in the Veterans Hospital, Salem.

He was born September 7, 1894 in Botetourt County, a son of William Jasper and Virginia Catherine (Crawford) King.

On October 18, 1922 he married Grace Page. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

He was a member and elder of Beulah Presbyterian Church. He had been a farmer and electrical contractor for more than 50 years in Highland County before his retirement. A veteran of World War I, he received a purple heart in combat and was a member of Highland VFW Post. He was also a charter member of Mill Gap Ruritan Club.

In addition to his widow, survivors include a daughter, Nancy K. White of Monterey; two sons, Darwin of Monterey and Zane King of Staunton; five sisters, Ora Hannah and Georgie Nelson, of Clifton Forge, Sally Charlerton of Coving, Mae Hannah of Roanoke and Vivian Lemon of Oriskany; brother, Alfred King of Oriskany; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Beulah Presbyterian Church by the Revs. C. William Cox and Jerry Ginn, with burial in Monterey Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Beulah Church Sessions and Mill Gap Ruritan Club.

The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Monday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
