Mary Pitsenbarger

Mary Elizabeth Pitsenbarger, 87, of Staunton, passed away Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 at Birch Gardens in Staunton.

She was born Oct. 5, 1924 in Head Waters, a daughter of the late Kenny G. and Rachel Snyder Pitsenbarger.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Byron Pitsenbarger and Gilbert “Gib” Vaiden Pitsenbarger; and a sister-in-law, Leona Simmons Pitsenbarger.

She graduated from McDowell High School in 1942. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Bridgewater College in 1946, master of science in education from Madison College in 1971, and received certification in department counselor education at the University of Virginia in 1976. After graduating from Bridgewater College, she began her teaching career at Stuarts Draft High School and afterward taught at North River High School, Churchville High and moved to Buffalo Gap High School when the new school opened in 1962. She retired in 1985 after 39 years of serving in education.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren.

A funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell by the Rev. Merle Dodson.

Burial was in Head Waters Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Robert “Dick” Armstrong, Steve and Elmo Varner, Donnie and Adam Botkin, Francis Florence, Lloyd Puckett, Dolen Puffenbarger and Frederick Leach.
