Reefa Bell (Hoover) McGuffin

Reefa Bell (Hoover) McGuffin, 86, of Bath County, Va., died May 25,1993, at Community House Hospital at Hot Springs, Va.

Mrs. McGuffin was born Feb. 19, 1907, at Timberville in Rockingham County. The youngest daughter of Rev. W.C and Maggie Miller Hoover. She was predeceased by her husband, William Hoover, and a sister, Ferne R. Hoover.

Survivors include a sister, Violette Brooks, a niece, Ann Brook, both of Fredericksburg; two great-nephews, Randy and Stephen Kiser of Stanley, Va. A number of cousins survive.

After completing high school at Timberville, she graduated from Bridgewater College with a bachelor’s degree and later from the University of Virginia with a master’s in education.

From 1924 to 1943 she taught elementary grades and English classes at Monterey High School in Monterey, VA.

 In 1944, she became principal of Augusta Springs Elementary School in Augusta County. In 1950, she became General Supervisor of Nelson County Schools. Holding this position until she resigned and retired in January of 1970.

On June 1, 1978, she and Mr. McGuffin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Monterey Presbyterian Church.

Joining the church in 1932, she was a Sunday School teacher and a member pf the choir. She was an early member of the 4-H Club and among the first All Stars in Virginia. She was a member and first Stare Executive Secretary of Delta-Kappa-Gamma, first president of the Kappa chapter, a past Worthy Matron of Nelson County Chapter 95, Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the Virginia Department of Classroom teachers and the VA Council of Administrative Women.

Since her retirement to the family farm called Happy Acres in Bath County, she has continued with work in her church and the community. Childless, she has many former students as her “beloved children.”

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, May 27, 1993, at the Monterey Cemetery with the Rev. William C. Cox officiating.

 She requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions made to your favorite charity.

Active pallbearers will be Paul Doyle, Bill Bratton, Andy Aldebo, Lucuis Stephenson, Stewart Lockridge, and Jacob Hevener.

Honorary pallbearers are Kenney Robertson, Mike Graham, Tommy Wilson, Sam Harris, William Hise, Dr. Larry Denius, and any of her “beloved children” attending the service.
