Robert Lee Moats 52, of Essex, Md. and formerly McDowell, Va. died Wednesday, September 2, 1987 at his home.

He was born October 7, 1934, in McDowell, Va. and wa s ason of the late John Floyd and Emma (Simmons) Moats. On June 29, 1985, e married Grace May Cunningham, who survives. 

He was a member and trustee of the brethren in Christ Church. He was also a logger and carpenter.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Barbara Gulley of Staunton, Va., a stepdaughter, Dorita Ramsey of Staunton, Va.; stepson, James L. Ramsey Jr. of Staunton, Va.; sister, Mabel Hatcher of McDowell, Va.; six brothers, Grover Moats of Staunton, Va., John Moats of Harrisonburg, Va., Edward Moats of McDowell, Va., and Rembert, Gene and Randolph Moats, all of Baltimore; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell with the Rev. David B. Rittenhouse officiating. Burial will be in Totten Cemetery near Doe Hill.

Pallbearers will be Gary Kisamore, Curtis Wayne Ailer, Barry Campbell, Butch Britt, Wayman Brock and Wayne Fink.

The family will receive friends 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
