Rodney Dare Chestnut, 88, of Hot Springs, passed away, Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at Bath Community Hospital.

He was born March 13, 1934, in Bath County, a son of the late Ray Newton and Helen Gay (Hamilton) Chestnut.

A veteran of the US Army, Rodney served in Korea. He had been employed as a groundskeeper at The Homestead.

Rodney will be remembered for his love of deer hunting, time spent digging ramps and calling figures for square dances. Additionally, he was a past member of the Bolar Ruritan Club, long-time member of the Hound Dog Hunt Club and as the “Candy Man” at the Springs Nursing Center. Above all, he enjoyed a good meal and spending time with his sons.

He is survived by five sons, Darrell Chestnut and wife, Mattie of Hot Springs, Richard Chestnut and wife, Rita of Hot Springs, Ralph Chestnut and wife, Patsy of Warm Springs, Rusty Chestnut and wife, Andrea “Andie” of Williamsville and Robbie Chestnut and wife, Carrie of Hot Springs; three brothers, David Chestnut, Carl Chestnut and wife, Joy, and Berlie Chestnut and wife, Annabelle, all of Hot Springs; five sisters, Lois Cauley of Hot Springs, Caroline Pritt of Hot Springs, Virginia Martin and husband, Lonnie of Warm Springs, Nora Simmons of Hot Springs and Emmie Gillespie and husband, Jimmy of Hot Springs; seven grandchildren, Catherine Carr, Josh Chestnut, Neal Chestnut, Liza Chestnut, Patrick Chestnut, Morgan Rockett and Britney Via; great-grandchildren, Stetson Chestnut, Hudson Chestnut and his sisters, Kennedy and Hadley; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Nelson and Joy Chestnut; and sisters, Chloe Miller and infant sister, Dorothy Chestnut; brothers-in-law, Jimmy Cauley, Homer Simmons and Leslie Pritt.

A funeral will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, December 4, 2022 at Mountain Grove United Methodist Church with pastor Donald Lee Altizer officiating. Interment will be held in Mountain Grove Cemetery.

In addition to his sons, pallbearers will be his grandsons, Neal, Josh and Patrick Chestnut.

Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
