Samuel William Smith, 80, of McDowell and formerly of Head Waters, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1987 in a local hospital.
He was born April 20,1907 at Sugar Grove, W. Va., a son of Joseph Berlin and Martha Delia (Puffenbarger) Smith.
He was a member of Hiner United Brethren Church. Prior to entering the hospital, he had made his home with his niece, Mrs. Tom Griffin of McDowell. He had been employed by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
He is survived by his widow, Clara Simmons Smith of Newport News; five daughters, Delia Jane Powers of Brandywine, Md., Goldie Burke of Front Royal, Margie Shifflett of Harrisonburg, Mary Margaret Bright of Manassas and Virginia Simmons of McGaheysville; a son, Gilbert Smith of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Losh and Mrs. Lillie Rexrode, both of Head Waters; a brother, John C. Smith of Headwaters; 20 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. Bernard Skeens, with burial in Head Waters Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Byron Pitsenbarger, Gilmer Ervine, Ralph Gutshall, Buck Eckard, Ronnie White and Robert Lee Smith.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Highland County Rescue Squad, Monterey, Va. 24465, or the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department, McDowell, Va. 24465.
