Sarah Stephenson

December 4, 1916 — May 11, 2006

Sarah Hope Stephenson, age 89, of Monterey, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at King’s Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.   She was born December 4, 1916 at Albertville, Alabama a daughter of the late Rev. W.B. Hope and Sarah (Owen) Hope.

Mrs. Stephenson was a graduate of the University of Montevallo, in Montevallo, Alabama and taught in public schools in Alabama and Virginia.

She was a member of Pisgah Presbyterian Church, Monterey Garden Club, Highland Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Bath/Highland Retired Educators Association.

Her husband, William R. Stephenson, Jr., preceded her in death on March 6, 1983.

Mrs. Stephenson is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Holmes and Ardis Stephenson, Jim and Debbi Stephenson and Ben and Mary Stephenson, all of Monterey; two granddaughters, Kathy Stephenson of Steamboat Springs, CO and Pam Stephenson of Harrisonburg; a grandson, William Stephenson of Monterey and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. C. William “Bill’ Cox officiating.

Interment will be in Monterey Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 15, 2006 at the funeral home.  The family will also receive friends at the home of Jim and Debbi Stephenson.

Pallbearers will be Doug Gutshall, Michael Herold, John Hevener, Randy Hooke, E.N. Pugh, Jr., Robin Sullenberger, Mark Swecker and William Stephenson.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Monterey Lions Club and the Bath/Highland Retired Educators Association.

Memorial contributions may be made to Weekday Religious Education, P.O. Box 602, Monterey, VA; Highland County Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, VA or Highland Senior Center, c/o The Highland Center, P.O. Box 556, Monterey, VA 24465.
