HIGHTOWN, VA Shirley Arlene Hartman, 75, of Hightown, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born August 27, 1939 in Highland County a daughter of the late Dewey Esau and Ethel (Mullenax) Rexrode. Shirley was a homemaker who loved to cook and bake, a babysitter and a waitress at various restaurants in the county. She was a member of Hightown United Methodist Church and Highland Senior Citizens. She enjoyed bluegrass festivals and being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On December 14, 1957, she married James Otis Hartman, who preceded her in death on September 26, 2007. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Cletus Rexrode and Harry "Jake" Rexrode. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Hartman of Hightown, Arlene Rhodes and husband, Fred of Hightown, Belinda Dunkle and husband, Robert of Franklin, WV; five grandchildren, Chasity Wilson, Jamie Hull, Kristen Armstrong, Tracy Armstrong and Timmy Armstrong; eight great-grandchildren, Isiah and Quintin Garland, Kaitlyn Wilson, Cayden Warner, Kolton and Kaylee King, McKinzy and Brooklyn Rhodes. Also surviving are two sisters, Margurite Dunsford of Covington and Charlotte Tyree of Fredericksburg; brother, William Rexrode of Richmond and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with the Rev. Andre Crummett and Rev. George Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Hightown Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Herman Puffenbarger, Doug Puffenbarger, Larry Whitecotton, Richie Hicks, Doug Gumm, Andy King, Timmy Armstrong and Jason Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Obaugh Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Arlene, 2290 Maple Sugar Rd, Hightown.
