Thelma Grey Beverage

Thelma Grey Beverage, 81, of Monterey, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024 at Augusta Health following a brief illness.

Born April 29, 1942, on Strait Creek Road near Monterey (where she lived her entire life), she was the daughter and only child of the late Roy A. & Argyle E. (Simmons) Gum.

On April 13, 1962, she married Orion O. “Jack” Beverage, who survives.

Thelma was a lifelong farmer, bookkeeper for Jack Beverage Construction, and former employee of the Monterey Hotel.  She enjoyed time spent cooking, gardening, and caring for animals.  Additionally, Thelma attended Hiner Church of the Brethren.

In addition to her husband of 61 years, she is survived by a son, Douglas “Dean” Beverage and wife, Kathy of Monterey; granddaughter, Lori R. Nelson and husband, Abraham of Churchville; great-granddaughter, Tenley; and great-grandson, Wick.  She is also survived by sister-in-law, Brenda Beverage of McDowell; as well as four nieces, three nephews, and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with Pastor Jeffrey Fike officiating. Interment will follow in Monterey Cemetery.   

The staff of Obaugh Funeral Home will receive those wishing to pay their respects 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 28th. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service and at other times at the home of Thelma.

Pallbearers include Steven Beverage, Wilton Simmons, Stuart Simmons, Garland Wimer, Alan Truslow, Junior Bradley and Jeff Wood.  Employees of Beverage Construction will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family would like to express special thanks to Thelma’s caregivers for their support, assistance, and genuine care.
