SUGAR GROVE, WV Vada Ellen (Smith) Wilfong, 90, of Sugar Grove, WV passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015 at Pendleton Manor. She was born on October 9, 1925, one of twelve children to the late William Gordon and Lula (Puffenbarger) Smith in the Stoney Run Community of Sugar Grove, WV. Her home place was dear to her heart all her life. Mrs. Wilfong was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member her entire life. She was a former member of St. Michael Lutheran Church and a member of St. Paul Independent Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker, gardener and especially loved flowers. She enjoyed crocheting and made many beautiful afghans. She was an honorary member of the South Fork Rescue Squad and a past member of Our Five Boys for VFW Post 9666 Auxiliary in Sugar Grove. On December 30, 1941 she married Silas Peter Wilfong, who preceded her in death on May 17, 1990. Mrs. Wilfong was also predeceased by four sisters, Glenna Puffenbarger, Jane Downs, Willadene Simmons and Wilda McDorman; and two brothers, Gilmer Smith and Cletus Smith. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherry Wilfong of Sugar Grove, WV; grandson, Allen Wilfong of Sugar Grove, WV and her beloved beagle, Max. She also leaves behind four sisters, Sheba Rexrode of Doe Hill, Cleo Simmons and husband, Vernon of Staunton, Charlotte Eckard of Harrisonburg and Wanda Pitsenbarger of Franklin, WV and her brother, Stanley Smith of Harrisonburg; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Sunday, November 29, 2015 at St. Michael Cemetery, south of Sugar Grove, WV with the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Active pallbearers will be K.D. Puffenbarger, Philip Downs, Johnnie Bodkin, Jeff Smith, Barry Simmons and Jackie Bodkin; and honorary pallbearers will be her nieces. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Independent Lutheran Church c/o Delbert Rexrode, Jr., 527 Windrush Lane, Doe Hill, VA 24433 or St. Michael Cemetery Association, 324 Wilfong Hollow, Sugar Grove, WV 26815.
