Virginia Gum

May 27, 1926 — July 5, 2009

Virginia C. Gum, 83, of Penn Laird, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.  She was born May 27, 1926 in Pendleton County, WV a daughter of the late Elmer and Virginia Maude (Smith) Crummett.

On August 16, 1947, she married Charles Ray Gum, whom preceded her in death on April 11, 2002.  She was also predeceased by a brother, Elmer Crummett, Jr.

Mrs. Gum was a homemaker and a member of the Crummett Run Church of the Brethren.  She was an avid collector of Abraham Lincoln memorabilia and wrote poetry and songs.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Shirkey of Penn Laird and Kathy and Steve Lam of Weyers Cave; two sons, Larry Gum of Harrisonburg and Terry Gum of Timberville; a special grandson whom she reared, Steve America and wife, Kim of McGaheysville; five other grandchildren, Suzanne Perl and husband, Brent of Newport News, Cynthia Hill of Grottoes, Jennifer Morris and husband, Wesley of Elkton, Jonathan Lam and companion, Cindy Rutledge of Staunton, Kristiana Arellano and husband, Lupe of Staunton; seven great-grandchildren, Mileena and Autumn Lam, Austin Hill, Bethany and Regan Morris, Ashton Lam and Mercedes Arellano; a sister, Norma Wolfe of Harrisonburg and a brother, Warren Crummett of Midland, MI.

A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Crummett Run Church of the Brethren with Rev. Darren Massey officiating.  Burial will be in the Crummett Run Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
