William "Shannon" Maloy, age 87, husband of Lucille Maloy of McDowell, passed away December 27, 2025 at his home surrounded by loving family.
Shannon was born July 9, 1938 in McDowell, where he remained a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Patrick Shannon and Leola Margaret (Swadley) Maloy.
At the age of seventeen, Shannon assumed sole responsibility of the family farm following his father’s sudden death. A dedicated cattleman, his working years were spent raising livestock on the farm and taking them to the cattle yard on market day. In his later years, Shannon was in the business of selling real estate, but even in his retirement, Shannon could be found keeping a watchful eye out for grazing livestock nearby. His son Michael and wife, Priscilla Maloy continue his legacy running the centuries old family farm. Shannon could always be found in his bountiful garden that he and his dear Lucille worked and grew together. They were known to raise more vegetables than they could ever eat, but they always had plenty to share with family and friends, especially ripe tomatoes and potatoes. A Christian, Shannon was a member of the McDowell Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder. He was also the director of the McDowell Presbyterian Cemetery. In addition to spending time with family, he enjoyed hunting as well as fishing in nearby Davis Run and Bullpasture Rivers. Well-known and loved by the community, he was often seen traveling through McDowell and conversing with friends at the local store. Shannon will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-nine years, Lucille (Moyers) Maloy; three children, Patrick Maloy of Milton, Delaware, Michael Maloy and wife, Priscilla Ann Maloy of McDowell, and Julie Maloy Isles and husband, Greg of Churchville; five grandchildren, Cass Ann Hamre, Jacob "Jake" Layne Maloy, Alexandria “Allie” Maloy, John Patrick Williams, and Ella Madeleine Williams; two great grandchildren, Emmett and Hallie Hamre; and his sister, Georgianne Hull and husband, Lyle of Churchville.
A funeral service will be held at 1p.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at McDowell Presbyterian Church with Rev. Beth Pyles officiating. Interment will follow in McDowell Presbyterian Cemetery.
Pallbearers include Jake Maloy, John Patrick Williams, John Vance, Kyle Obaugh, Jeff Shumate, Herb Lighter, Eddie Moyers, and Asa “Ace” Graves.
The family will receive friends 5 -7 p.m., Tuesday, December 30 at Obaugh Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to McDowell Presbyterian Cemetery on the Hill, 1982 Bullpasture River Road, McDowell, VA 24458, as well as Highland Medical Center, P.O. Box 490, Monterey, VA 24465.
