William Elie Varner, 72, of McDowell, died Saturday morning, January 9, 1988 at Monterey.
He was born Dec. 19, 1915 at McDowell, a son of George William and Sallie Cathern Botkin Varner. On Oct. 28, 1939 he married Lela N. Howdyshell, who survives.
He was a farmer and an active member of Hiner Church of the Brethren.
In addition to his widow, surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Fay V. Simmons of Headwaters, Mrs. Margaret V. Simmons of Staunton and Mrs. Nancy V. Whitecotton of Churchville; a son, Charles "Sonny" Varner of McDowell; three sisters, Mrs. Pansy V. Botkin of Churchville and Mrs. Cora V. Botkin and Mrs. Beulah V. Botkin, both of McDowell; a half brother, Carl L. Varner of Middlebrook; a half sister, Bertha V. Turner of Staunton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A service was conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in Obaugh Funeral Home by the Rev. John Garber Jr. and the Rev. Larry A. Whetzel, with burial in Head waters Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Richard, Herbert, Gilbert and Glenn Botkin Jr., Gilmer Ervine and Wilmer Varner. Honorary pallbearers were friends attending the service.
