William "Doug" Gum

March 21, 1942 — December 5, 2012

William “Doug” Douglas Gum, 70, of Grottoes, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at his home.

He was born March 21, 1942 in Staunton, a son of the late Kermit Woodrow and Gretta Blanche Wimer Gum.

Mr. Gum graduated from Monterey High School, class of 1960, as well as National Business College. He retired from Dupont after 39 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and playing bluegrass music. Additionally, he loved time spent on the family farm in Blue Grass.

He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory S. and Shellie Gum of Bridgewater and Jodi W. and June Gum of Churchville; five grandchildren whom he dearly loved, Victoria, Caleb, Dakota, PFC Joshua Gum and Hunter Lawson; his brother, Gary W. Gum and Gary’s friend, Mary Doyle of Churchville.

A funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell with Pastor Randy Cosner officiating.

Burial followed at Blue Grass Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Lanny, Larry and Virgil Wimer, Muzon Fulk, Richard Ryder, Lane Thomas, Dwight Harper Jr. and Robert Templeton. Honorary pallbearers were Leo Gum, Bardon Warner and friends attending the service.
